As designer and master carpenter, I worked with a limited budget and crew of one to recreat the world of Narnia. Inspired by my favorite production designer, Roger Ford, the main elements of the stage needed to represent two seasons: winter and spring. The cast of the production, from The Pasadena Junior Theatre, needed to be able move the set pieces on and off stage themselves. Additionally, the mountain needed to be constructed for people to walk on. This was the first large scale set production for this theatre.
Set in New York, spanning the Great Depression and World War II, the musical Mame focuses on an eccentric woman named Mame Dennis whose famous motto is “Life is a banquet and most poor sons of bitches are starving to death.” Her life with her wealthy friends is interrupted when the young son of her late brother enters her life. They cope with the Depression in a series of adventures. No matter how hard times were Mame always looked fabulous. Appearance, style, and presence were always important to Mame. She sold all her furniture but would try to keep her nicest clothes. In my design, I used a rich selection of textiles and was assigned a specific color palette which included grey, pink, red, and black.
